CHERCHEZ LA FEMME
Cherchez la Femme is a quartet that uses dynamic choreography and original live music to explore queerness, nonconformity, and the power and risk of women taking up space.
Cherchez la Femme draws inspiration from the National Portrait Gallery’s Brilliant Exiles exhibit, which celebrated women who defied gender norms and lived boldly. Through dynamic choreography and original live music, the piece explores queerness, nonconformity, and the risks and power of women taking up space. Reclaiming the French expression to “look for the woman,” it asks us not only to search for her, but to truly see her.
The creation of Cherchez la Femme was commissioned by the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery.
